Jules Verne, 1828 in Nantes geboren, wurde mit einem Werk von 80 Romanen zum meistgelesenen und -übersetzten Autor seiner Zeit. Hinter seinen spektakulären Visionen technischer Wunder, die zum Teil später Wirklichkeit wurden (›Von der Erde zum Mond‹, ›20 000 Meilen unter den Meeren‹), blieb der literarische Wert seines Schaffens weitgehend unbemerkt; heute wird seine Sprachkunst immer deutlicher erkannt. Jules Verne starb 1905 in Amiens.
