Cover of John Stuart Mill: Three Essays on Religion (Barnes & Noble Digital Library) (ePUB)

Posthumously published in 1874, these essays — “Nature, ” “Utility of Religion, ” and “Theism”—are highly critical of traditional religion, rejecting the belief in an omnipotent, benevolent God. Often undervalued, these essays are some of Mill’s most brilliant works.

About the author

John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was an English philosopher, economist, and progressive reformer.  A forceful defender of individual liberty, racial equality, and the rights of women, he made important contributions to the philosophy of utilitarianism, which, in seeking a basis to judge actions, looked toward consequences rather than intent.
