Jules Verne’s 1875 book The Survivors of the Chancellor: Diary of J. R. Kazallon, Passenger describes the fatal journey of the British sailing ship Chancellor from the viewpoint of one of its passengers.

In 1857, the Sarah Sands, transporting British troops to India, caught fire off the coast of Africa. The burning and sinking ship finally reached a harbour after 10 days of valiant effort.
