This 1916 bestseller is set in a wealthy enclave of Long Island, New York. Rachael, the depressed wife of a rich and fashionable man, finds a promise of happiness after a period of suffering and doubt, but must do the unthinkable—divorce and remarry. However, the troubles do not end there, in the book the
New York Times praised as Norris’s ‘best and most careful work.’
About the author
Kathleen Norris (1880-1966) was an American novelist and early feminist. Her romantic novels, many set in California among upper-class families, were popular and critical successes—earning her the ranking of highest-paid female author of her time. Among her best-known works are Certain People of Importance (1922) and Beauty’s Daughter (1935), the latter of which, like a number of her books, was made into a film.
