Crimes of the Powerful and the Contemporary Condition 
The Democratic Republic of Capitalism

This text will be challenging and provocative, suggesting that if critical criminology is to continue to shed new light upon the significant problems we face, the lives of our most powerless and marginalized citizens against the most powerful, then both must be represented with a greater degree of honest and intellectual curiosity. They suggest that true power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others, and to act in a way that puts people beyond the confines of law. It is a form of, they propose, super liberty and the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life and behaviour. They will discuss and illuminate this complex and unique idea with examples, case studies and accessible analysis.

About the author

Dr James Treadwell is Professor of Criminology at Staffordshire University and has also worked at the University of Birmingham, and University of Leicester. Previously he worked for the crime reduction charity NACRO, and as a Probation Officer in the West Midlands. He undertakes ethnographic and qualitative research for crime and criminal justice related projects, including studies of the English Defence League, and the August 2011 English Riots.
