Malcolm Lowry (Cheshire, 1909 – 1957) fue poeta y novelista. Tras su graduación en Cambridge, se mudó a Londres, donde conoció al poeta Dylan Thomas, entre otros. Después se instaló en Francia y contrajo matrimonio con la ex estrella de Hollywood Jan Gabrial. Lowry la siguió a Nueva York, donde estuvo ingresado debido a su alcoholismo, y luego a Hollywood. Su novela “Bajo el volcán”, ampliamente reconocida como una de las grandes obras del siglo XX, ejemplifica el método de Lowry como escritor, que aplicaba capas de complejo simbolismo sobre el material autobiográfico.
