Gaius Plinius Secundus (AD 23/24 – 79), also known as Pliny, the Elder, was a Roman author, natural philosopher, and naval and army commander of the Roman Empire. He was also a friend of the emperor Vespasian. As a writer, Pliny became famous for his encyclopedic Naturalis Historia (Natural History), which became one of the oldest known books of nature and an editorial model for encyclopedias. He spent most of his spare time studying, writing, and investigating natural and geographic phenomena in the field.
