René Caillié (1799-1838) stammte aus einfachen Verhältnissen. Schon früh durch die Lektüre von Robinson Crusoe fasziniert, beschloss er im Alter von sechzehn Jahren sein Glück in Afrika zu suchen. Dr. Heinrich Pleticha (1924-2010) lebte und arbeitete in Würzburg als Lehrer und Honorarprofessor. In der Edition Erdmann ist er u.a. Herausgeber von Mungo Parks Reisen ins innerste Afrika. Susanne Zanker ist Germanistin und Romanistin. Ihre verdienstvolle Erstübersetzung von René Cailliés Reisebericht zeichnet sich besonders durch die große Sensibilität bei der Übertragung des schwierigen Originaltextes aus.
