About the author

Robert Ervin Howard (1906–1936) was an American author of pulp fiction whose prolific work has cemented his place among the early giants in the fantasy genre. Born and raised in the rough Texan oil boomtowns, Howard found escape through his vivid creations, often melding adventure with otherworldly elements. Best known for his character Conan the Barbarian, Howard is also the creator of the lesser-known but equally intriguing character King Kull, who debuted in ‘Kull of Atlantis – The Complete Series’. Pre-dating Conan, Kull is an Atlantean barbarian and monarch whose tales are set in the antediluvian Thurian Age. Howard’s narratives commonly explore themes of civilization versus barbarism, drawing on his broad knowledge of history and love of boxing to infuse his scenes with visceral action. Despite a tragically short life, ending at the age of 30 by suicide, Howard’s work has lived on, influencing generations of fantasy writers and birthing the sword-and-sorcery subgenre. His prose, marked by a swift, bold rhythm, has been lauded for its passionate intensity and up-close portrayal of unyielding heroes facing insurmountable odds. ‘Kull of Atlantis’ offers readers a taste of Howard’s strong narrative voice and rich, adventurous storytelling, which captures the timeless struggle between man, myth, and fate.
