Der 1864 geborene Robert Hichens war ein international erfolgreicher Autor von Satiren und Horrorgeschichten.
Sein auch ins Deutsche übersetzte Roman The Garden of Allah von 1904 wurde dreimal verfilmt, darunter 1936 mit Marlene Dietrich in der Hauptrolle. Auch die Erzählung Bella Donna erlebte drei Verfilmungen. Die Geschichte The Paradin-Case bildete 1947 die Vorlage zum gleichnamigen Film von Alfred Hitchcock.
