Sarah Grand
The Heavenly Twins (Barnes & Noble Digital Library)

Support

In this 1893 novel, an overlooked classic of early feminism, Grand follows three young women—one of whom, Angelica Hamilton-Wells, is half of the heavenly set of twins in the title—through marriage and young adulthood, where each learns, in different ways, to fight against the prevailing patriarchal society.

About the author

Sarah Grand (1854-1943) was a British writer active in the women’s suffrage movement. Her works focused on the “New Woman.” She was especially critical of the subservient position to which women were condemned by marriage, and of the naked hypocrisy that held wives to a higher moral standard than their husbands.
