Published posthumously in 1897, this collection of lectures traces the development of human personality and prose from the time of Aeschylus to the present, identifying a consistent trend toward greater individuality.  Lanier’s thesis is that the novel, of all literary forms, best exemplifies individuality, which is why it has become the paramount literary form.
