Ha realizado trabajo de campo en Taiwán y en las provincias chinas de Fujian y Shandong. Es editora ejecutiva de China in a Comparative Perspective y miembro del consejo editorial de Critique of Anthropology. Sus intereses de investigación son el género y las relaciones sociales, la economía moral, la modernidad y las comunidades rurales, el valor y los valores, la ley y los conocimientos legales, las nociones de justicia, los derechos políticos y sociales, y la respuesta local en el mundo capitalista global.
