Alfredo Fernández is the author of Adrift: The Cuban Raft People (2000), translated from Spanish by Susan Gierbach Rascón. Fernández surveys the turbulence produced by the collapse of the USSR—and concludes that the greatest collateral damage has been inflicted not on the regime of Fidel Castro but rather upon the men, women, and children seeking to flee his dictatorship. He is also coauthor of Paulo Freire on Higher Education: A Dialogue at the National University of Mexico (Sunny Series, Teacher Empowerment and School Reform) (State University of New York Press, 1994).
