Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was a British novelist, journalist, secret agent, and travel writer. He not only wrote great novels, but popularized the form for the first time. He is best remembered today for his masterpiece Robinson Crusoe, as well as the picaresque novel Moll Flanders and the semifictional Journal of the Plague Year.
