Cornhill Magazine in England. The story has James’s famous international theme — the collisions between the old world of Europe and the new of America.

As an American who had lived in Europe (and in England in particular) for many years, he very frequently put European characters in an American setting, and vice versa – exploring the manners, morals, and behaviour of one group on another.
