The works satirize the hypocrisy and degeneration of a few intellectuals in the rear area during the Anti Japanese War. Ding Guyun, a great painter, was infatuated with women and embezzled huge Anti-Japanese fund. He had to feign death in a big fire to escape his blame. At the end of the story, he witnessed the exhibition of Ding Guyun”s "posthumous works" held by his son, who had become a hero of Anti Japanese War, in memory of the artist”s father. What makes him most unbearable was that the female cheater who took away his embezzlement money had become a generous patriot. He had to face his idol, listen to his son”s praise, secretly scold his hypocrisy and run away.
