Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918 – 05 December 2013) was South Africa’s first democratically elected president. His unshakable belief in a united South Africa, where people of all colours and creeds would live together under a democratically elected government, protected by an equitable constitution, led to him becoming an icon of twentieth century politics.
