Brantz Mayer (1809–1879) was an American author, lawyer, and historian particularly recognized for his work in the realm of American history. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Mayer imbibed a keen interest in literature and history from an early age. He was one of the founding members of the Maryland Historical Society and served as its president. His literary style often weaved historical facts with vivid storytelling, providing a rich, though sometimes controversial, tapestry of the American past. Mayer is perhaps best remembered for “Captain Canot; Or, Twenty Years of an African Slaver” (1854), a harrowing account of the transatlantic slave trade through the experiences of Theodore Canot, a slave trader. While the book claims to be a memoir of Canot, Mayer was responsible for editing and supplementing Canot”s recollections, which he purportedly narrated. Today, the work stands as a complex contribution to antebellum literature, offering insights into the dark realities of slavery and the slave trade.
