This 1882 Wessex romance follows the tender story of two star-crossed lovers: Lady Constantine, who is stuck in a miserable marriage, and Swithin St. Cleeve, a young astronomer. Hardy’s aim was to “set the emotional history of two infinitesimal lives against the stupendous background of the stellar universe.”
