Born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, Bellamy attended Union College but left before completing his degree. Starting his career in journalism, he went on to write both short stories and novels. His early work, such as ‘The Duke of Stockbridge’ (1879), reflected his interest in historical fiction.
