The Double Life

Ủng hộ
The Double Life by Gaston Leroux is a short story about a man named Jean Kergrist who is possessed by the spirit of a robber king from his past life. The story begins with Kergrist, a middle-aged rubber stamp manufacturer, finding a small oaken chest in his attic. Inside the chest is a black feather, which Kergrist immediately feels a connection to.

As Kergrist begins to study the feather, he begins to have strange dreams and visions. In these dreams, he sees himself as the robber king, a powerful and ruthless man who ruled over a vast empire. Kergrist is initially horrified by these dreams, but as they continue, he begins to feel a sense of excitement and power.

Eventually, Kergrist is fully possessed by the spirit of the robber king. He becomes a different person, more confident and assertive. He also becomes more violent and reckless. Kergrist’s friends and family are concerned about his behavior, but he refuses to listen to them.

One night, Kergrist goes out on a rampage, robbing and killing several people. He is eventually caught and arrested, but he refuses to confess to his crimes. He claims that he is not responsible for his actions, that he was possessed by the spirit of the robber king.

Kergrist is eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a mental asylum. However, he never recovers from his possession. He remains in the asylum for the rest of his life, a prisoner of the robber king’s spirit.

The Double Life is a dark and disturbing story about the power of the human mind. It is a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession and the importance of self-control.
