Gone with the Wind is a war-related novel against the background of American Civil War and Reconstruction in 1860s.However, the author Margaret Mitchell does not place her focus on battleground. Along the plotline of the love story of Scarlett, a daughter of an American plantation owner, the author depicts her fate of frustrations. This novel builds two images that strike root in people’s heart: Scarlett, who is indomitable and brave yet selfish and shallow, and Rhett, a shrewd and sophisticated businessman. This is an "elegy for the south" that describes all aspects of the society in American south around the war.
