Susan Coolidge, born Sarah Chauncey Woolsey on January 29, 1835, in Cleveland, Ohio, was an esteemed American children’s author of the late 19th century. Coolidge, a pen name adopted from her paternal grandmother’s family, is best known for her classic series of novels about the Carr family, including the beloved ‘What Katy Did’ series. With an education from the Cleveland Female Seminary and further tutelage in Europe, Coolidge was well-equipped for her literary pursuits. Coolidge’s narrative style combined engaging storytelling with moral lessons, reflective of the ideals of her era and aimed primarily at a young female audience. ‘In the High Valley’ (1890) is one of the sequels in the ‘Katy Did’ series, located in Colorado and illustrating the advent of adulthood for her cherished characters.
