Within his dramatic story are themes that capture the intellect and the emotions: crime and punishment, the relentless persecution of Valjean by Inspector Javert, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine, the amorality of the rogue Thénardier, and the universal desire to escape the prisons of our own minds. Les Misérables gave Victor Hugo a canvas upon which he portrayed his criticism of the French political and judicial systems, but the portrait that resulted is larger than life, epic in scope – an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses even as it touches the heart.

Victor-Marie Hugo est né le 26 Février 1802 à Besançon et mort le 22 mai 1855 à Paris à l’âge de 53 ans. Victor Hugo est un écrivain, dramaturge, un homme politique, un académicien et un intellectuel engagé français. Il est le chef de file du romantisme, courant littéraire du XIX° siècle.

Hugo s’exile après le coup d’état du 2 décembre 1851, qu’il condamne vigoureusement pour des raisons morales, dans Napoléon le petit, pamphlet publié en 1852, dans Histoire d’un crime, écrit au lendemain du coup d’État et publié 25 ans plus tard et dans Les Châtiments. Il vivra son exil à Bruxelles puis à Jersey. Chassé de Jersey en 1855 pour avoir critiqué la reine Victoria, il s’installe à Guernesey dans sa maison Hauteville House. Il fait partie des quelques proscrits qui refusent l’amnistie décidée quelque temps après (« Et s’il n’en reste qu’un, je serai celui-là »). Ces années difficiles sont très fécondes. Il publiera notamment Les Châtiments (1853), oeuvre en vers qui prend pour cible le Second Empire ; Les Contemplations, poésies (1856) ; La Légende des siècles (1859), ainsi que Les Misérables, roman (1862). Il rend hommage au peuple de Guernesey dans son roman Les Travailleurs de la mer (1866).

Victor Hugo retourne en France en septembre 1870 après la défaite de l’armée française à Sedan et reçoit de la part des Parisiens un accueil triomphal
