Saint Louis, 1914 – Kansas, 1997. Nacido en el seno de una familia adinerada, Burroughs creció rodeado por el lujo. Tras estudiar literatura inglesa, medicina y antropología, y permanecer durante algún tiempo en el Ejército, se mudó a Nueva York, donde desarrolló una fuerte adicción a la heroína que se prolongó durante más de quince años. En su periodo como drogadicto, Burroughs residió en Texas, Nueva Orleans, Tánger, París, Londres, México y otros países iberoaméricanos. Burroughs influenció el mundo del rock desde Bowie a Cobain y a un cierto tipo de cine y pintura. Junto a otros poetas representantes de la contracultura como Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kérouac, Gregory Corso y Lawrence Ferlinghetti, simbolizaba la vida bohemia, la rebeldía contra el poder establecido y el inconformismo, bandera de la generación beat. Sus novelas más conocidas son Yonqui (1953) y El almuerzo desnudo (1959), escrita durante su estancia en Marruecos y publicada en París, lo propulsó a la fama y al oprobio: fue censurada en EEUU durante siete años.
