About the author

William Walker Atkinson (1862–1932) was a prolific writer, attorney, merchant, and an influential figure in the early 20th century’s New Thought movement. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Atkinson embarked on a career in law before turning to the then-emerging trend of New Thought—a philosophical movement which proposed the idea of practical spirituality applied to daily life. His writing career spanned several decades during which he authored innumerable books, the most notable being ‘Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World’ (1906), and ‘The Power of Concentration’ (1918). Atkinson adopted numerous pseudonyms, perhaps the most recognized being Yogi Ramacharaka under which he authored ‘The Hindu-Yogi Science of Breath’ (1903), a work that delved into the Indian tradition of yoga, specifically pranayama, or the science of breath control. Atkinson’s works fused Western and Eastern thought, eloquently interwoven with practical advice for personal development, harnessing the power of the mind and understanding the potential of human consciousness. His literary style is notably didactic, aimed at the layperson but containing a depth of knowledge that attracted a devoted following. Atkinson’s teachings continue to resonate in contemporary circles of self-help and holistic health practices.
