To Live is a novel full of blood and tears. Yu Hua tells the story of how people bear great sufferings through the suffering life of a Chinese farmer. The book talks about the richness and breadth of tears; It tells the nonexistence of desire: it tells that people live for living itself… To live won the Italian Grzana Carver Prize for Literature(1998), the Taiwan’s China Times 10 Best Books Award (1994), and the Boyi of Hong Kong’s 15 Best Books Award (1990). He was selected as one of the "top 100 Chinese novels of the 20th century" by Hong Kong’s Asia Week. The book was selected by 100 critics and literary editors in China as "10 influential works of the 1990s".
