Jan von Ruysbroeck wurde 1317 zum Priester geweiht und bald darauf Vikar in der Kirche St. Gudula in Brüssel. 1908 wurde er durch ein päpstliches Dekret für selig erklärt. Sein Gedenktag am 2. Dezember ist ein gebotener Gedenktag für die Augustiner – Chorherren und -Frauen und findet sich auch im evangelischen Namenskalender der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland.
