He is the author of several acclaimed and prizewinning books, including Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice, The Sound of Freedom: Marian Anderson, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Concert That Awakened America, and Arthur Ashe, A Life.
