Johnnie Mae Maberry is a Jackson Mississippi native. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Tougaloo College and Co-Director of the Institute for the Study of Modern Day Slavery at the same college. She is a professional and exhibiting artist whose works have exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. She is a proud member of NAAHBCU Alliance of Artists and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She has created a series of works based on the WPA Narratives; and works that address social justice issues. Maberry has completed all course work for her doctorate in philosophy at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in Visual Arts (IDSVA) in Portland, Maine. As a first generation college graduate, Maberry is honored to have been blessed with four children who earned bachelor degrees and three of whom earned doctoral degrees. She is equally proud and blessed to have ten grandchildren who are excelling in their spiritual and academic growth.
