CIA Covert Operations in Indonesia, 1957-1958

Today the vast archipelago of Southeast Asia islands known as Indonesia is in the headlines because of political instability, religious tension, and violence in the streets. Forty years ago similar conditions led the Central Intelligence Agency to mount a top-secret covert action campaign designed to hold that nation’s left-leaning President Sukarno’s feet to the fire and prevent a strategic crossroad from falling into the communist camp. Ken Conboy received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a master’s in international economics from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He also has studied at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. From 1986-1992, Conboy served as deputy director at the Asian Studies Center, a Washington, D.C. based think tank. The author of numerous articles and books about Asian military history and covert operations, he currently resides in Jakarta, Indonesia. 

James Morrison is a retired military officer with thirty years of active-­duty service. He lives in San Antonio, Texas, and is also the coauthor, with Conboy, of
Shadow War: The CIA’s Secret War in Laos.
