Jianzhen (688-763), born in Jiangyang, Guangling (now Yangzhou, Jiangsu), with the common surname Chunyu, was a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty. During his study tours in Luoyang and Chang”an, the young Jianzhen followed the famous local masters of Luzong to learn Buddhist law, referenced various classics, and also learned medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. In the first year of Tang Tianbao (742), Japanese monks Rong Rui and Puzhao went to Daming Temple in Yangzhou to invite Jianzhen to travel east. Jianzhen, who was fifty-five years old at the time, agreed immediately, and from then on, they began the arduous and unprecedented journey to the east, and finally arrived in Japan in the thirteenth year of Tianbao (754). After Jianzhen arrived in Japan, he was warmly welcomed by the Japanese court. Emperor Xiaoqian personally issued an edict and awarded him the title of "Chuan Deng Master". Jianzhen erected an ordination altar at Todai-ji Temple and conferred the bodhisattva ordination for Emperor Xiaochen.Jianzhen commanded the construction of the famous Tang Zhaoti Temple. In 763 AD, Jianzhen was sitting at his residence at Tang Zhaoti Temple in Tang Dynasty, his face facing west and died. Today, the deeds of Jianzhen”s travel to the east have become a legend in the history of Sino-Japanese cultural dissemination. This book takes Jianzhen”s six travels to the east as the main plot, with twists and turns in the middle, many branches, and going through life and death trials and tribulations.
