A human rights worker disappears while crossing the border from Hong Kong to mainland China. She is presumed kidnapped by the Partystate, but no trace of her can be found. She leaves behind a husband and young daughter. Told from her husband’s point of view, Liberationists is part vexed love story, part tale of a search for a missing person, part meditation on the value of freedom, democracy and human rights. It depicts the relationship between a parent and young child in a time of crisis and the lives of those fighting for a better society in today’s dystopian China. The initial stirrings of the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement are key to the climax. Why push for political and social change at great personal risk, especially when efforts often appear futile? Liberationists examines the motives, logic and actions of people who endure hardship and persecution to realize their ideals. Xun Yuezang is the pen name of a writer and activist who has worked on human rights in China, Hong Kong and elsewhere for years. The pseudonym is necessary to protect those upon whom some of the story’s characters and events are based.
