The Phantom of the Opera is a Gothic novel by French writer Gaston Leroux, first published as a serial in Le Gaulois from September 1909 to January 1910 before being released as a complete book in March 1910. The story is set in the Paris Opera House and follows the mysterious and disfigured Phantom (or “Opera Ghost”), who haunts the opera house, demanding tribute and secretly manipulating events from the shadows. His obsession with the young soprano Christine Daaé leads to a tragic love triangle with her childhood friend, Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny. The novel blends romance, horror, and mystery, exploring themes of obsession, beauty, and the duality of human nature. It remains a classic of Gothic literature and inspired numerous adaptations, most notably the famous 1986 musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
