About the author


Herbert A. Giles (1845–1935) was a British sinologist and diplomat. He served as an emissary to China from 1867 to 1892 and was later the second professor to ever teach Chinese at Cambridge. He wrote many books on Chinese history and the Chinese language, including Historic China and Other Sketches (1882), The Civilization of China (1911), and China and the Manchus (1912).
